WB concerns over BD Avian Influenza Preparedness Project

A World Bank Team recently reviewed the project status and expressed concern over the project implementation pace of 'Avian Influenza Preparedness and Response Project' as Bangladesh continue to remain a high-risk country for Avian Influenza (AI) outbreak.
'Avian Influenza Preparedness and Response Project' co-financed by the World Bank and Avian and Human Influenza Trust Fund (AHI TF) started its operation since October 2007.
However, the overall Avian Influenza situation in the country appears to have stabilized with significantly less outbreaks being reported so far in 2008/09, as compared to that of 2007/08 period.
The first AI outbreak was reported in February 2007 and continued till July 2007, a second wave came from September 2007 till May 2008 and a third spell of outbreak started from September 2008 and so far fourteen outbreaks have been reported.
H5N1 virus in poultry has been confirmed in 47 out of 64 districts (73%). With the detection of first human case of avian influenza in May 2008, Bangladesh has moved into the Pandemic Alert Stage.
HPAI has posed a serious socio-economic threat to the poultry industry, potentially affecting about 4-5 million poultry employees, most of whom depend almost exclusively on poultry for their livelihood.
The Government has taken steps to enhance surveillance and other control measures for preventing transmission of AI virus.
'Avian Influenza Preparedness and Response Project', co-financed by the World Bank and Avian and Human Influenza Trust Fund (AHI TF), started its operation since October 2007.
The World Bank provided a US$16 million concessionary credit for the project implementation, while AHI TF provided US$2.0 million as grant.
With a human case detected, the ongoing World Bank co-financed 'Health, Nutrition and Population Support Programme (HNPSP)' is financing AI-activities related to human health.
A World Bank Team recently reviewed the project status and expressed concern over the project implementation pace.
The World Bank is working closely with other development partners including USAID, DANIDA, the Japanese Government and UNDP to combat avian flu in association with UN specialised agencies like FAO, WHO, and UNICEF.
