Over 300 affected; three die in a week

An outbreak of Hepatitis E virus in Chittagong city's Halishahar and Agrabad areas for the last three months has put the lives of the residents at high risk.

According to sources in the area, at least three people died in the last week since June 17, while over 300 people have been affected in the last three months.

One of the deceased was Shaheda Mili, 43. She died in a private hospital in the city...

Hepatitis E: Cases on the rise in Ctg

An outbreak of hepatitis E has spread to many areas in the city, particularly in Halisahar, in the last few days.

The number of hepatitis E patients in Halisahar was 892 on Wednesday, up from 396 on June 28, according to Chittagong Civil Surgeon Office.

Cases of hepatitis E virus have also been reported in Agrabad, Dewanhat, Pahartoli, Double Mooring, Mansurabad and Bandar areas, said sources in Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) health department.

Local residents said contamination of water supplied by Chittagong Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (CWASA) might have caused the outbreak...

At least four people lost their lives due to HEV infection in the last few months and thousands are still suffusing from HEV in a large part of Chittagong city. This water-borne epidemic has thus challenged the capacity of supplying safe drinking water and maintaining sewerage system there, which is the second most important metropolis of Bangladesh with a population of more than 2.5 million people. Such big number of people thus has become exposed to an HEV outbreak. Hundreds of patients are being diagnosed with HEV infection in different parts of Chittagong. According to the office of the civil surgeon, Chittagong, 99 new patients had been identified with HEV infection on July 2 this year and on July 1, this number was 125. From May 1, 2018 till July 2, 2018 the total number of patients infect by HEV was 848. This is alarming and worrisome...
