Budget under strained economy
Dhiraj Kumar Nath

The strain on the economy due to an unexpected disaster like avian flu calls for further subsidy to this growing sector. Bird flu has badly hit the rural-based investment of about Tk. 15, 000 crores and caused a loss over Tk. 4, 100 crore so far, as estimated by a recent survey conducted by the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Coordination Committee.

The poultry sector, a growing economic field employing a huge number of women and operating with micro-credit involving about Tk. 50 lakhs, is in great distress now.

Prices of essentials continue to rise
F.M. Masum

Frustrating all government efforts, the prices of most essentials including edible oil, pulses and sugar are on the rise while the price of rice is still high. It may be mentioned that the edible oil businessmen on February 21 at a meeting with the Government pledged that they would sell edible oil at Tk 106.50 per kg in the retail market. Visiting different city markets, this correspondent found that edible oil was selling at Tk 120 per kg and lentil (local) was selling at Tk 92 per kg, up by Tk 7 compared to that of the previous week. The price of sugar is also on the rise as yesterday (Friday) it was selling at Tk 42 per kg.

The price of other commodities including onion, green chilli remain unchanged but the fish price are increasing abnormally after a severe damage by the recent bird flu to the country’s poultry industry. It may be mentioned that a few days ago, the Government decided to monitor some nine items of daily commodities to control the price spiral which has been a major concern for the caretaker Government since its inception. However, it is yet to start the price monitoring work through its different law enforcing agencies. Yesterday, imported onion was selling at Tk 16 per kg, local onion at Tk 18 per, imported lentils at Tk 88 per kg, flour at Tk 43 per kg. Potato was selling at Tk 14, cucumber at Tk 20, tomato at Tk 26, Korola at tk 48 per kg, bean at Tk 24 per kg.

Non-stop price spiral
Traders continue the blame game
Staff Correspondent

Prices of different essentials continued to soar at both wholesale and retail markets in the capital and elsewhere in the country over the past week, intensifying sufferings of people belonging to all strata.

Retailers and wholesalers blamed shortage of supply and price hike in the international market for the increase of prices of essentials like edible oil, pulses, sugar, flour, onion, chicken, egg, powdered milk and vegetables.

They also alleged that importers and a section of unscrupulous traders are contributing to the price hike.

The unabated increase of prices of essentials has left a large section of city dwellers utterly frustrated.

"The prices are going beyond our reach. House rent, children's education expenses and the overall living cost have been increasing while our incomes remain unchanged. How will we afford all these essentials?" said a frustrated customer, Anwar Hossain, at Hatirpul market yesterday.

The price of poultry chicken shot up Tk 10-15 per kg and stood at Tk 75-80. Chicken was sold at Tk 60-65 a week ago. The price of local chicken also increased by Tk 100 per hali (four pieces), climbing to Tk 500-550 from Tk 400-450.

The price of eggs rose by Tk 3-6 per dozen; eggs were selling at Tk 48-54 per dozen at different retail markets.
