Massive number of crows dying in Rajshahi city
Officials waiting for lab results from capital to determine cause; no human affected so far

Around 50 crows died in different areas of Rajshahi city due to unknown reason in the last seven days.

Reports of dead crows at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) campus started from February 3 and some 17 crows were found dead near RMCH boundary wall on the next day, said Mizan Uddin, district livestock officer.

Another dead crow was found near the RMCH's Centre for Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound premises yesterday.

The government has deployed a large team of scientists who work on humans and animals, livestock experts, and anthropologists to northern Rajshahi district after an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza has been found in crows.

Director Prof Mahmudur Rahman of the government?s disease monitoring arm, IEDCR, told bdnews24.com that the team started got down to business on Wednesday.

He said the team rushed to the spot after laboratory testing confirmed the crows had H5N1 avian influenza, which is commonly known as bird flu.

The testing followed the reports of unusual deaths of crows at the premises of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital...
