They're in trouble. Can biotechnology save the fruit?

The banana we eat today is not the one your grandparents ate. That one - known as the Gros Michel - was, by all accounts, bigger, tastier, and hardier than the variety we know and love, which is called the Cavendish. The unavailability of the Gros Michel is easily explained: it is virtually extinct.

Introduced to our hemisphere in the late 19th century, the Gros Michel was almost immediately hit by a blight that wiped it out by 1960. The Cavendish was adopted at the last minute by the big banana companies - Chiquita and Dole - because it was resistant to that blight, a fungus known as Panama disease. For the past fifty years, all has been quiet in the banana world. Until now.

Panama disease - or Fusarium wilt of banana - is back, and the Cavendish does not appear to be safe from this new strain, which appeared two decades ago in Malaysia, spread slowly at first, but is now moving at a geometrically quicker pace. There is no cure, and nearly every banana scientist says that though Panama disease has yet to hit the banana crops of Latin America, which feed our hemisphere, the question is not if this will happen, but when. Even worse, the malady has the potential to spread to dozens of other banana varieties, including African bananas, the primary source of nutrition for millions of people.

Crop disease is only half the problem. The other part is denial. One of the most recent places Panama disease struck was Australia. Three years ago, when I was researching my book on bananas, growers down under were bragging that they'd found a way to control the disease, which first appeared in 1997 near the Northern Territory town of Darwin. "We have developed a rapid and accurate DNA-based diagnostic test...used in the detection and management of outbreaks," asserted a brochure issued by the country's Cooperative Research Centre for Plant Protection.

The Australian management program consisted of quick quarantine of fields that were proven by the test to be infected. But early detection doesn't necessarily buy enough time. The plan came apart in March 2006, when Cyclone Larry ravaged Australia's banana growing regions. High winds destroyed more than 85% of the banana crop, and flooding spread infected water and dirt to the surviving banana trees. An October report from the Australia Broadcasting Company documented the rapid spread of the blight on previously-disease free plantations. Reporter Anne Barker wrote that the "industry, which once had such bright prospects, is now facing collapse."

Panama disease hasn't hit our hemisphere yet, and the big banana companies appear unalarmed. Chiquita's 2006 annual report doesn't mention banana disease at all. The company's 2007 end-of-year SEC filing names plant disease as a "risk factor," but only mentions black sigatoka , which can be controlled chemically.

Why should it be? After all, Latin America, where we grow all of our bananas, is a hemisphere away from the places where the disease is now spreading. With all that ocean, could the epidemic could actually reach our bananalands?

Not only is it possible, it might already be happening. In late December, 2007, Philippine agriculture secretary Arthur Yap announced that the U.S. had agreed to import a large shipment of Cavendish bananas from Philippine plantations (overall, we import about 8.5 billion pounds of bananas each year, all from Latin America).

Panama disease is so virulent that a single clump of dirt tracked in on a tire tread or a shoe can spark a country-wide outbreak. It isn't hard to imagine that a stray banana box from the Philippines, loaded into a Dole shipping container could be left unloaded at Long Beach, California, and continue on to Guatemala, where it could infect that nation's crop and tear through Latin America. In fact, the original Panama disease outbreak that decimated the Gros Michel almost certainly went from Asia, to the Caribbean, to Central and South America, though the exact path was never determined. The spread of Panama disease from Asia to the banana plantations of the Western Hemisphere is more than imaginable. With shipping containers traveling the world, and bananas crossing hemispheres, it's likely.

When the first outbreak of Panama disease hit the Gros Michels of South and Central America, it nearly put the entire industry out of business. Only at the last minute was a substitute banana - the Cavendish - found. The Cavendish was thought to be resistant, and for 50 years, that was true. No longer.

Now, the future of the Cavendish lies in genetic engineering. Scientists have created bananas that resist Panama disease in the lab. The problem with these engineered bananas is that they lack the other characteristics - ideal ripening speed, a thick skin, and the right taste - that make a banana variety attractive for export. Making a single banana with all of those attributes may take years. Another issue is consumer acceptance: surveys have shown that most shoppers would reject modified bananas, even if they were proven to be safe.

Bananas are, however, excellent candidates for genetic modification. They are sterile - no seeds or pollen by which mutations might spread - and reproduce vegetatively. Right now, regulations have prevented even publicly funded research organizations from testing more than a handful of transformed bananas in the field. Most of this research has been conducted under the auspices of Bioversity International , an umbrella group that works mostly on food security issues. The bananas being field tested were developed by scientists in Leuven, Belgium, and are being grown at experimental plots in Uganda, a country where about 80 percent of some local diets is made up of the fruit, and where the consequences of a banana wipe-out would be disastrous. The millions of people like those in Uganda who depend on bananas to survive would be the real beneficiaries of a better banana.
There's little time left. If there is a "grail banana," it is likely to be found in the lab. The question is whether we'll let it split from there.

The Plantain eaten in Uganda is likely not to be a Cavandish as it is a very large green banana and is eaten cooked (I always hated them but the tiny local 'apple' bananas were great).
But the real lesson of this sorry tail is the loss of biodiversity in our food species. The banana is unusual in the very large numbers of naturally occurring members of the family - which bodes well for the diverse gene pool should provide resistant strains - but the so many of our plant crops are now monocultures this is going to continue to occur. Loss of habitat to support the wild gene pool is the long term problem and genetically engineered strains tend to produce an even smaller number of used strains exacerbating the problem. The higher yields obtainable with engineered strains are also usually dependent on greater inputs - fertilizers and in some case chemicals for pest control.

Silagi Muhammad is a banana businessman who has been in this business for over 8 years. He buys bananas from farmers in rural areas in the western region of Uganda and sells them to dwellers of Kampala city.

He however laments that the volume of banana he has been taking to markets has over the years continued to decrease. He partly attributes this the attack of some banana plantations by the deadly a banana bacterial wilt disease also know as Xanthomonas

This comes as global food crisis continues to hit the world hard, the livelihoods of millions of Ugandans, most of who depend on Bananas as their food crop continue to be threatened by current isolated outbreaks of banana bacterial wilt disease.

In the last eight months, the disease has been reported in close to ten districts in the country with district Agricultural Officers there calling for immediate intervention to combat the disease.

Ntungamo district is one of the affected districts in the country. The district production secretary Eljah Atuheire says parts of Kaforero, Ibare and Nyakyera sub counties have been badly hit.

He says some affected plantations have been destroyed while technical and political sensitization on the disease is going on in a move to eradicate the disease.


The other district of Uganda that has witnesses the outbreak of this disease is Rukungiri. The dreaded banana bacterial wilt ravaged banana plantations in the seven out of the eleven sub counties in the district putting the banana industry at a big risk of being wiped out.

Early this year, Zepher Karyaija the Rukungiri district NAADS coordinator reported that Nyakagyeme, Kebisoni, Ruhinda, Buyanja, Nyakishenyi, Kagunga, and Buhunga sub counties were under attack. In Kasese district banana bacterial Wilt Disease destroyed close to 100 acres of crop in Kasese the past eight months.

Gregory Masereka, the agriculture extension officer for Karambi sub-county says his sub county is one of the three sub-counties worst hit by the disease in the district. In Kanungu district, the disease was detected in plantations in Kambuga, Kirima and Kihihi sub-counties as well as in Kanungu Town Council some few months ago.

Uganda government says Banana Bacterial Wilt Disease is the number one plant disease problem in Uganda. The disease can potentially devastate thousands of acres of banana crop, on which millions of Ugandans depend for their daily sustenance. However, the ministry of Agricultural, Animal, Industry and Fisheries says notes that this disease is not widely spread and most farmers do not yet need to worry but it is important that farmers learn to recognize and watch out for signs and possible presence of the disease.


A number of characteristics of this disease include yellowing and wilting of the plant starting with the most peripheral leaves. After wilting, the leaves tend to droop and the plant eventually stops growing and dies. Some of the steps to fight this disease include destroying banana plants that are affected by the disease and burying the whole affected plant.

Is this the same wilt or another related wilt? If it is killing the giant green cooking plantain as well as the eating bananas then it is even more worrying. The UK tends to use a different banana than the US and continental europe although this is changing. Subsides/tariff structures are being dismantled but did favour the smaller bananas grown in commonwealth caribbean states and this has historical inertia which is slowly being eroded.

Uganda: Banana wilt threatens food basket

Mr Charles Kyomuhendo, a farmer in Mbarara, could fail to pay full fees for his children this academic term. The reason being that his source of income has been dealt a devastating blow by a natural calamity ? the banana bacterial wilt.

?My entire life depends on the banana yields that I harvest and [sell to] cater for my family needs,? Kyomuhendo told Sunday Monitor in an interview last week.

The return of the banana bacteria wilt (BBW) three years after it was thought to have been defeated also has serious implications for a large part of the country as the region has been the food basket for the population located in central and western Uganda.

Like the current global financial crunch, the disease calls for immediate and concerted effort to stop it. Kyomuhendo is not alone. The disease has spread to almost all the districts of the south western region.

Ms Teo Kataratambi, a big banana farmer in Nyehanga parish, Nyakayojo Sub-county in Mbarara District, said the disease is threatening the livelihood of hundreds of people.

?The disease is real and its back,? Ms Kataratambi said. ?I have about 15 acres of bananas and I have a number of casual workers who I pay on daily basis. Without the plantation, they and I will be out.?

In this sub-county alone the disease has affected the parishes of Nyarubungo, Rukindo, Katoojo and Kicwamba.
Two years ago, the Food and Agriculture Organisation initiated farm field schools to help stop the spread of BBW.

She said some farmers fear to report the disease outbreak in their plantations for fear of being ordered to destroy them. This farmer, who produces over 300 bunches of bananas every month, said the disease spreads very fast.
In neighbouring Ibanda District, the wilt has hit, and is ravaging five sub-counties.

According to the district National Agricultural Advisory Services? (Naads) coordinator, Donat Rwaributwire, the disease has now spread to the sub-counties of Kichuzi, Bisheshe, Ishongororo, Kincheche and Nyamarebe.

The disease was last reported in Ibanda two years ago.
He said all agricultural organisations including the Naads office have already embarked on a massive sensitisation campaign to prevent further spread of the disease.

?This was after the affected communities petitioned the district production department to urgently intervene which prompted our offices to take up the matter and save the situation,? the Naads boss said.

Farmers in the affected areas have been sensitised on the symptoms and how to dispose affected plants.

Farmers in Ibanda have already set up anti-BBW taskforces to enforce the by-laws enacted to control further spread.
Some of the by-laws demand that diseased plants must be cut down, chopped and either buried or otherwise disposed of.

Also persons found tresspassing in other people?s plantations with cutting tools - that may have been used to chop affected plants - will be fined Shs5,000 per incidence per person.

?For any Banana plantation with male buds overdue for removal after set deadline will see its owner fined Shs500 per plant, diseased plants not removed by deadline; fine is Shs10,000 to Shs50,000 depending on number of diseased plants,? states one of the by-laws.
The banana disease is now in the districts of Ntungamo, Isingiro, Kabale and Mbarara. It could spread even further.

Symptoms of BBW on affected plants include yellowing and drying of all leaves, starting with young ones; premature and random ripening of fruits which then develop spots in the mesocarp; drying and rotting of the male flower part and an almost instant yellow pus like liquid seen in the stems of suckers when cut.

The disease spreads with greater speed when the same cutting tool used without first heating is used indiscriminately in a given plantation.

Unfortunately, the disease is affecting banana plantations at a time when a banana processing factory was just being constructed in Bushenyi. Bushenyi has been hit particularly hard 21 out of its 29 sub-counties affected and this could have implications from intended processing/value addition for crop.

Sabastiane Tugume, a banana dealer in Bushenyi, likens the disease to the global financial melt down. Given the rate at which the disease is spreading.

In Nyabubare sub-county casual observation reveals that some farmers have already lost acres of banana plantations which had to cut down. This has brought the gloomy prospect of hunger closer.

Daniel Ruterahururu, LC1 chairman Itaaza cell in Nyabubare captures this situation quite well:
?We are here confused, we do not have money to buy the drug [to fight the disease] and we don?t even know the drug to use because government has not come up to tell us (farmers) what could be the drug to apply,? he said in an interview, adding that district technocrats have held several meetings in the area with farmers but they have not provided them with any real solution.

Meanwhile, Bushenyi District agriculture officer, Ms Jenninah Tumushabe wants local leaders to be vigilant in monitoring the spread of BBW.

She said some farmers are stubbornly refusing to uproot affected plants while warning that those who continue deliberately refusing will be dealt with.

With the farmers like Cyril Owarwe in Nyarugote parish, Nyabubare saying they are at a loss as to what to because they have been disappointed several times, residents of Kampala should brace for higher prices as Bushenyi has been the major supplier of banana (matooke) to the city.
Farm gate presently range between Shs4,000 and Shs8,000 depending on the size of a bunch.

Monday Rwanga, an officer in the district?s production sector, said they are now treating the matter as an ?epidemic?.

?Some farmers confessed to having been overwhelmed because they remove the affected stems, bury them but the disease reappears and new ones get infected faster than before,? Rwanga added.

It is estimated that at least 10 people along the production-market line share the proceeds from one bunch of bananas transported to Kampala.

In the absence of the crop, many will be out of business starting with the person who weeds, the plantation owner, the (bicycle) transporter to the central banana market, those who levy the tax at the market and then those who load trucks. The others are the business person, truck owner, operators of lodges in which traders and transporters sleep, refilling stations.

?This is the one reason why the government should interest itself in fighting the disease,? Kataratambi said.

Uganda issues new banana disease alert

Uganda has put its national crop disease surveillance network on the alert for a possible outbreak of a new incurable banana virus.

The Director for Crop Resources in the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr Opolot Okasaai, said the Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV), is likely to strike Uganda from across Rwanda or DR-Congo, threatening the multi-million annual local banana industry.
Already Rwanda, DR Congo, Congo-Brazaville, Gabon and Hawaii have reported the problem.

Dr Okasaai said the virus has no known cure so far, and that all available banana cultivars and varieties in the country were vulnerable to the attack.

This will be a major blow to the agricultural sector following a recent Banana Bacterial Wilt Disease (BBWD) attack, which has devastated over 50 districts in the country, wiping out up to 90 per cent of farm yields and threatening household food security. Uganda has one of the highest per capita matooke (green bananas) consumption rate in the world at about 500kg.

Matooke alone occupies 38 per cent of Uganda?s arable land, accounting for food security to over 12 million Ugandans, according to the National Agricultural Research Laboratories. But in the last five years, production has sharply decreased due to numerous diseases and pest attacks.

Following the new threat, the government has sent a scientific team to Rwanda led by the head of Banana Research Programme, Dr Wilberforce Tushemereirwe, to assess the danger.

?We are also alerting all farmers and district agricultural officers, especially on the western borders to be on the look out,? Dr Okasaai said.

The BBTV virus is transmitted by insects called aphids. Unlike the BBWD, the new virus is not mechanically transmitted through using the same farm tools like pangas, which may have cut an infected crop.

Dr David Talengera, a senior banana researcher at the National Agricultural Research Laboratories in Kawanda, said the virus is known to stop the banana from flowering and producing a bunch. The leaves of the banana form a rough, bunchy-like structure pointing upwards, with no bunch forming.

He said the disease is also transmitted by planting materials when a parent stock produces a sucker that is transferred across distances for planting. ?We are discouraging this. We intend to develop guidelines on handling this disease,? Dr Talengera said.

Scientists have also developed national banana virus index to address multi-disciplinary interventions. The viruses that have been identified as pathogens in banana (Musa spp.) are abaca mosaic potyvirus (AbMV), banana bract mosaic potyvirus (BBMV), banana bunchy top virus (BBTV), cucumber mosaic cucumovirus (CMV), and banana streak badnavirus (BSV).

Of these five viruses, BSV is reported to be the major virus problem affecting banana production in Uganda. The other four cause yield losses of considerable economic importance in various banana cultivars.

Banana production has in the last five years declined significantly, mainly due to pests and diseases attacks. Prof. Mateete Bekunda, a soils scholar at Makerere University said the increament in tempereatures had made most parts of the country?s soils barren, and habitable to numerous pests and parasites.

Uganda?s temperatures have increased by between 0.2 and 0.3 degrees centigrade in the last 50 years, giving rise to various crops and animals diseases, according to Prof. David Kabaasa, the Head of Veterinary Medicine at Makerere University.

He said more crops and animals pests were likely to occur. On average, many small-scale farmers in Uganda produce about 800kg of grain especially beans and maize per hectare as a result of poor soils compared to 10 tonnes in other parts of the world with chemical fertiliser use.
