Special booklets on the ?bird flu? would be distributed at schools

Azerbaijan Ministry of Education will distribute in schools of Baku, Sumgayit and Caspian region special informational booklets and leaflets on ?bird flu? in the coming days, according to the Ministry of Education.

The actions target informing teachers and pupils about the virus. The literature was published with the financial aid of the US Agency of International Development and Center for the Agricultural Business of Azerbaijan.

Additionally, Baku office of UNICEF has prepared posters, which would be distributed among all the educational institutions on the initiative of the Ministry.

Azerbaijan? state committee to fight avian flu and coordinate joint activities of organizations in the country in this field instructed the Agriculture Ministry, Health Ministry and Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources to continue monitoring the situation on avian influenza in the country.

The Commission told APA that it was stressed in the next meeting of the committee that carelessness regarding bird flu is unacceptable. Both the government and local relevant organizations should approach this problem seriously and raise public awareness on influenza.

It was also said at the meeting that relevant instructions have been given to make answerable those who violate the ban on hunting wild birds. It was noted that effective preventive measures are being taken against spread of bird flu in the republic.

The surveillance shows that death cases among wild birds have fallen recently. The Health Ministry reports that no one is suspected of contracting the virus at present.

The state commission recommends the population to strongly keep hygienic-sanitary regulations, and urges immediately inform local vet services or healthcare institutions about dead birds./APA/

REGULAR BIRD FLU MONITORING ENDS IN AZERBAIJAN

The regular bird flu monitoring in Azerbaijan ended August 25.

The State Veterinary Service at Agriculture Ministry told the APA the monitoring covered Absheron peninsula, Pirallahi island, Sarvan national Preserve in Davachi region, Shirvan National Preserve in Salyan, Aghgol national Preserve in Aghjabedi as well as Gizilagaj National Preserve in Lenkeran and coastal areas.

Samples were taken from 36 wild birds during the monitoring. The blood samples were sent to Republic Veterinary Lab for test. The results will be announced in a week.

The bird flu monitoring was conducted by the Veterinary Service in partnership with Ecology and Natural Resources and Health Ministry. No dead birds were detected in the monitored areas.

The State Veterinary Service warns about possible outbreak of the disease through migratory birds and therefore, states hunting, sale and consuming of wild birds are still banned.

Azerbaijan has medications for treatment of 500 bird-flu inflected patients.

The Republic Anti-Plague Station deputy director Faig Mammadzadeh said, APA reports. He said the medications have been distributed to all central hospitals for the treatment of first patients.

"We informed all hospitals that if they have patients suspected in contracting bird flu, they should send them to Baku. Their arrival may take several hours. That is why the patients can take 'Tamiflu.' This medicine is not dangerous for the constitution," he said.

The medicine is expensive and should be taken in no late than two days after contracting. Otherwise, it will be too late to save the patient. He said the patients should be taken to medical attendant?s station in remote villages. Eleven medical attendant's stations doctors' have been already trained.

Mammadzadeh also stated that dogs, cats and other wild animals might be infected with bird flu, but it causes no danger to people.

Azerbaijan's Health Ministry, US Agency of International Development (USAID) and the International Medical Corps today organized a joint media workshop for journalists.

The goal is to provide media representatives with detailed information on avian influenza and show ways how to make public such news.

The Republic Anti-Plague Station deputy director Faig Mammadzadeh addressing the event said bird flu virus was found in Hong Kong first in 1997. Six of the 18 infected patients died from this virus.

"New wave of this disease started in 2003, which still continues. 248 people have contracted avian flu since 2003 137 of which died," he said.

Mammadzadeh said there is risk of outbreak of human-to-human transmission of bird flu. "H5N1 is in permanent mutation. The virus might be contracted from human beings too. The trouble is this form of bird flu has no treatment-vaccine. In this case, millions of people may die from the disease. If there is mass transmission, there might be lack of medications. People should be prepared to protect themselves from the virus," he said.

Stressing the importance of Azerbaijan's being prepared for that, Mammadzadeh said precautions are being implemented against the spread of avian influenza.

Hot line will operate in the county to raise awareness on bird flu in October.
