'There has been no outbreak in South Tyrol for now' these are the words of Paolo Zambotto, director of the veterinary service of the Province of Bolzano regarding the alarm that came from North Tyrol after the death of six swans for the bird flu in a zoo.
A situation that is however worrying given that in 2022 the worst avian flu epidemic in history broke out in Europe and, according to the latest data, 50 million animals had to be killed.
At the moment, however, as explained by the Province of Bolzano, there is no reason to fear that avian flu will also spread in our region. 'At risk are animals found near wetlands or industrial farms. In South Tyrol there are some larger farms for egg production, otherwise the farmers keep manageable flocks of poultry,' says Zambotto.
'Avian flu is a serious threat to bird health” emphasizes Arnold Schuler, provincial agriculture minister. “Despite the increase in the incidence of bird flu throughout Europe - he continues - South Tyrol has always been spared. This is also due to the necessary preventive measures by farmers. I continue to appeal to prudence in terms of prevention'.
