Bird flu alarm in Eisenstadt

A case of avian influenza in the district of Eisenstadt-Umgebung was detected.

A case of bird flu has become known in the Burgenland on tuesday afternoon. According to veterinarian director Robert Fink, the suspicion of avian influenza has been confirmed in a livestock farm in the district of Eisenstadt-Umgebung. Operation has been suspended. All animals are now protected by animal welfare and the animal carcasses are made harmless. There is no danger to humans, says Fink.

The company is a "hobby-flock" for private needs, which includes around 100 animals, mainly chickens. The farm had been temporarily suspended on Monday after 28 animals had died from Sunday to Monday and the owner had turned to the authorities, Fink reported. On Tuesday the final ban was due to the positive test results.

The disease has been spread over wild birds. The owner had kept the poultry to the stables, explained Fink. However, the disease was only detected after the incubation period.

The holding is now cleaned and disinfected. Furthermore, a protection and monitoring zone was drawn within which all poultry holding companies were examined by the authorities. However, there are no large poultry farms or slaughterhouses in the zone, the veterinary director said.
