Wednesday, 19/08/2009 Australia's second case of swine flu in pigs has been detected, at a piggery in Victoria's Goulburn Valley. The Victorian Department of Primary Industries says investigations began on Monday, after it was found that the pigs were not eating.
The piggery has been placed in quarantine as vets continue investigating.
The DPI says it's working with the Department of Human Services, Australian Pork Limited, the Victorian Farmers Federation and the Federal Department of Agriculture. A piggery at Dunedoo in NSW was discovered to have swine flu in July, after a worker infected the pigs. Victoria's chief vet Dr Hugh Millar says pig owners should maintain strict biosecurity procedures on their properties and report anything unusual.

Epidemiological comments
This is the first outbreak of influenza in swine in Australia.
The affected farm is isolated. It is a mixed farming operation, raising both cattle and sheep (separated from the piggery). There is no poultry nearby. There has been no introduction of live pigs for more than 2 years. The property has been placed under quarantine.
Disease has been very mild in affected pigs. 12 of 13 clinical cases sampled gave a positive result to the Influenza A matrix qPCR, with one indeterminate result. 9 of 13 animals gave a positive result to a H1 specific qPCR, with 4 indeterminate results.
Epidemiological investigations are continuing. Further work is under way to isolate virus and sequence PCR material.

A PIGGERY in Victoria's north has been placed in quarantine after returning positive tests for swine flu.
The Department of Primary Industries implemented strict biosecurity measures and sent veterinarians to investigate after being told on Monday that pigs at the Goulburn Valley property were not eating.
The virus was nothing for people to worry about in terms of what they ate, Victorian Agriculture Minister Joe Helper said.
"While tests have confirmed the presence of Influenza A H1 at the piggery, it is important to stress that this is not a human health issue and that national and international food authorities continue to advise that pork and pork products are safe to eat," he said.
All precautions were being taken to contain the virus on-site and the movements of animals traced to ensure it had not spread, Victoria's Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Hugh Millar said.
"At this stage of testing, we do not know for certain if it is the same strain as the one affecting humansbut it appears highly likely that it will be the same strain," he said.
It was the second case of swine influenza detected at a piggery in Australia following its discovery in New South Wales late last month.
