The weather might still feel nice and warm, but Queensland Health reported this week there have been 49 confirmed cases of swine flu in Australia this year, as well as 162 reported cases of other flu.
And Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young warned this week a second wave of H1N1 swine flu pandemic ?will occur this year?.
?The number of deaths reported globally by the World Health Organisation has now increased to nearly 17,000, almost double the number in November,? she said.
As of last week, three people were already hospitalised with the virus which was associated with the deaths of 41 people in Queensland of 191 nationally.
Dr Young was encouraging people to ?take up the opportunity to be vaccinated?.
About 826,000 people have already received the free swine flu vaccination in Queensland and a second-round of clinics was being arranged from April 17.
?Vaccination is particularly important for babies aged six months and older, children and adolescents to help protect themselves and the broader community,? she said.
?Seasonal flu vaccination is beginning to become available and that can be given instead of the human swine influenza vaccine. The 2010 winter seasonal influenza vaccine includes the human swine influenza strain as well as two other influenza strains (A H3N2 and B).?
Dr Young said people could be immunised now against human swine flu, and still receive the seasonal flu vaccination when it became widely available.
Kawana Budget Direct sales consultant Joshua Baker was one of about 30 employees who lined up yesterday to receive the combination vaccination.
And he swore it hurt ?no more than a mosquito bite?.
For Mr Baker, having the flu vaccination is not just about protecting himself from getting sick this winter, it?s about protecting others, like his dear old ?pop?.
?I used to live with my grandad who, because of his age and emphysema had lung issues,? he said.
?The first year I didn?t get it done and he got flu and ended up in hospital.
?Unfortunately he passed away before Christmas, but I thought this is one thing I should get done as I shouldn?t pass it on to anyone else.
?I passed it on to pops so easily; I want to inoculate myself against that.?
