Australia: Hotel evicts swine flu sufferers

Hotel evicts swine flu sufferers

A decision by a Holiday Inn in Sydney's CBD to evict two swine flu victims has won support from the hotel industry.
The Holiday Inn at Darling Harbour is evicting two guests because it says it is not its job to manage people's quarantine.
The Australian Hotels Association says health departments are ignoring a national pandemic policy by using hotels to quarantine victims.
The association's chief executive, Bill Healey, says the policy was developed with the previous federal government during the SARS emergency.
"We have accepted that people that may have been in contact with people with a possible disease may need to be housed in our hotels for observation but once someone has been diagnosed with a problem, they should be in a health facility," he said.
New South Wales health authorities have promised to help swine flu victims find alternative accommodation if they're evicted from their hotels.
In a statement, the InterContinental group, which owns the Darling Harbour Holiday Inn, says it is working with the Health Department to ensure the guests are transferred elsewhere.
"Our first priority is the health and safety of our guests and staff," the statement.
"While the hotel has taken appropriate measures to ensure these infected guests have remained isolated from others in the hotel, it is not appropriate for us to manage the quarantine of confirmed sufferers of the virus."
Meanwhile, another hotel in Parramatta says reports that it is evicting swine flu victims are false.
This morning Australia had around 150 confirmed cases of swine flu. Victoria is by far the worst-affected state with 99 cases, with New South Wales a distant second with 33.

New Zealand
Hotels earmarked for swine flu quarantine

Three hotels have been earmarked by health officials as quarantine and treatment facilities as part of New Zealand's preparations to handle growing cases of swine flu.

The hotels, near Auckland International Airport, were rolled into the action plan to combat the virus after officials had trouble finding somewhere to quarantine international visitors.

Last week a number of hotels refused to take visitors who needed to be quarantined after showing symptoms at the airport. A spokeswoman for the Auckland Regional Public Health Service said the three hotels came forward after reading of the refusal.

The number of confirmed swine flu cases in New Zealand has grown to four. Another 12 people are considered "probable" and a further 101 of having the virus. 388 people are in isolation.

The Rangitoto College students who featured in headlines this week came free from isolation restrictions at 5am yesterday, as Lindisfarne and Hastings Girls High settled into quarantine.

All 46 students and six teachers from the Hawke's Bay schools went into isolation after returning from a music trip in the United States on Tuesday. Four students had showed flu-like symptoms.

A New Zealander in Fiji who had travelled to Mexico is also being checked as a suspected swine flu carrier - one of two identified in the island nation.

Health Minister Tony Ryall last night praised the hard work of health professionals working on the swine flu outbreak.

Hotels are no place for swine flu sufferers

1 June 2009 | by Rosemary Ryan

It is inappropriate to expect hotels to accommodate people diagnosed with swine flu and it is inconsistent with agreed protocols for dealing with a pandemic, according to the Australian Hotels Association.

?Hotels have a role under the National Pandemic Action Plan which was developed after the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) scare several years ago,? said the AHA?s national chief executive officer, Bill Healey.

?This role involves hotels housing visitors who may arrive in Australia on a ship or plane after having contact with someone who has been diagnosed with a communicable disease.

?The plan provides for these people to be housed in hotels for observation in a quarantined environment.

?It was never our understanding that hotels would be expected to accommodate people who have been diagnosed with a disease.

?This is a health issue and people diagnosed with swine flu should be located in a health facility.?

The hotel industry is continuing to consult with government about this issue.

?We are prepared to play a broader role if swine flu becomes an even greater problem in the community than it already is,? Healey said.
