Health authorities are urging NSW families to get young children vaccinated against the potentially deadly influenza, with the infection killing 37 people in NSW so far this year.

Three children have died of flu in Victoria and children are also among the 25 flu-related deaths, sparking concerns that children in NSW – especially under-five-year-olds – could also be vulnerable amid the spread of the viruses across the state...

Forty-three people have died of flu in NSW so far this year, eclipsing the total death toll for 2018, health authorities report.

The authorities have confirmed 1843 flu cases across the state in the week ending May 26 alone.

It brings the total number of confirmed cases since January to 16,153, just shy of 2018's full-year total of 17,439, when 40 people died of the infection.

The true prevalence is likely to be higher and rising, as temperatures plummet...

NSW flu deaths rise to 57, aged hit hard

The elderly continue to fall victim to this year's flu virus, with seven more fatalities in the past week of a person aged over 60 years, bringing the annual toll to 57 confirmed deaths.

NSW Health has warned flu outbreaks in aged-care facilities continue to rise, prompting a warning for people to get vaccinated before visiting the elderly and to stay home if they are ill.

The warning comes as the Marco Polo Aged Care Centre at Unanderra, near Wollongong on the NSW south coast, remains in lockdown following a flu outbreak.

Fifteen residents have come down with the virus in the past three weeks, four of whom have subsequently died, the Nine Network reports.

NSW Health Director of Communicable Disease Dr Vicky Sheppeard last week said that so far this year, there have been 87 confirmed influenza outbreaks in aged-care facilities, 12 of which were reported last week...

With school holidays under way, NSW Health Director of Communicable Diseases Dr Vicky Sheppeard said it was important for families to minimise the spread of the flu The latest weekly Influenza Surveillance Report shows there were 6243 laboratory-confirmed influenza cases in the week ending July 7, taking the yearly total of flu cases to 43,844.
Since April 1, 210 children have been admitted to either the Children's Hospital at Westmead or John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle with influenza, and three of those children were admitted to a critical care ward.

So far this year 2.4 million government-funded flu vaccines have been distributed across the state, and Dr Sheppeard said it was never too late to get the flu shot.
