Mumps alert as cases surge

WA doctors are alarmed by a surge in cases of mumps, a highly infectious viral illness that is rarely seen today but can cause fatal complications such as meningitis and miscarriage.
Health Department figures show 19 cases have been reported in WA since late December compared with just two cases in the same period last year, with most occurring in older teens and young adults aged in their early 20s living in Perth.
The department said yesterday it was concerned by the spike in cases that did not appear to be linked, suggesting the virus was in wide circulation and there were many other cases not being detected...

An outbreak of mumps in Perth has worsened, with health authorities confirming 30 cases since late December compared with the usual handful in a year.
Several patients have been admitted to hospital, though none has become seriously ill.
The Health Department's latest Virus Watch bulletin said there had been three new cases in the past week and urged GPs to be on the lookout for patients with the highly infectious viral illness. It said most of the Perth patients had been infected locally and were older teenagers or adults aged in their 20s and 30s, and many were partially or fully vaccinated against mumps...
Western Sydney Adults Urged to Update Mump Immunization Status

NSW Health has recently raised concerns over mumps immunization status. Dr. Vicky Sheppeard, Director of Communicable Diseases for NSW Health, said people being affected from mumps were increasing.
About 15 cases of the condition were reported last month. Dr. Sheppeard averred that a significant number of adults have missed two doses of MMR vaccine in childhood as they were not offered routinely in those days...
