DES MOINES- Over the past few months we've heard a lot of talk about Bird Flu, including what would happen if the virus mutated and spread from human to human. But are people in Polk County concerned? From the looks of the first Bird Flu forums in Des Moines, they may not be.

Less than ten people showed up to the first of eleven forums put on by the Polk County Health Department on Monday.

Many people have been calling the department asking what they should know about the Bird Flu. In response, the Polk County Health Ddepartment arranged eleven forums called, "Planning for Pandemic Influenza: A Local Response."

Rick Kozen, from the Polk County Health Department, said, "The world is getting smaller and smaller. Any disease is no more than a couple of plane rides away from us."

The next Polk County Bird Flu Forum will be held again on Tuesday night at both East and Roosevelt High Schools. The meeting will start at 6:30.

Re: Attendance at Bird Flu meeting scarce

I have a suggestion.

If the US government or a state really wants to get the message out about the pandemic they should contract with the same people that made the 'Truth' TV ad campaign about smoking.

The 'Truth' ad campaign was a success because it was 'in your face'.

That got people's attention and right now that is what you need to do to get people's attention.

That is of course if they really care.

You want America to wake up, then smack them across the face.

Otherwise don't complain when the American populace takes it out the public health officials and government organizations when their world comes crumbling down.
