At Governor Jindal's Request, Federal Government Declares Commercial Fisheries Failure for Louisiana due to Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico

Declaration triggers aid from Economic Development Administration

BATON ROUGE (May 25, 2010) - At the request of Governor Bobby Jindal, the U.S. Department of Commerce has declared a commercial fisheries failure for Louisiana, triggering much-needed aid for commercial fishermen from the Economic Development Administration.

Governor Jindal said, "As more and more oil washes into Louisiana marshland and onto the shores of our beaches, aid to the fishing community is critical so that our coastal communities can get back on their feet as quickly as possible. Speedy assistance is necessary to restore our fisheries and to protect the livelihoods of fishermen and their families."

Governor Jindal requested the declaration on April 29 in a letter to U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Gary Locke. Click here to read Governor Jindal's letter: http://gov.louisiana.gov/index.cfm?md=newsroom&tmp=detail&catID=2&articleID=2142

The fisheries failure was declared under Section 312(a) of the Magnuson-Stevens Act. For information about the declaration, click here: http://www.commerce.gov/news/press-releases/2010/05/24/commerce-secretary-gary-locke-announces-fishery-failure-determination
