Assam: 22 cholera deaths in 2010, none in 2011 thanks to water supply upgrades

At least 16 people have died from cholera in the north-eastern Indian state of Assam, most of them workers on tea plantations. More than 150 people had been affected by the disease over the past week, but the deaths were reported since late Tuesday. Preliminary investigations indicated the victims contracted cholera because of unsanitary conditions, government health official Anup Bhattacharya said. Cholera causes vomiting and diarrhoea, and victims can die of dehydration. The disease is usually transmitted through contaminated food and water. The 16 victims were mostly workers from six tea plantations in the Sonitpur district, about 230 kilometres north of Assam's main city, Guwahati. "The problem is the victims were brought to hospitals very late, once their condition deteriorated," a doctor at the state-run hospital in Biswanath Chariali town was quoted as saying. "They were either ignoring the disease or resorting to self-medication with some even relying on quacks." Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said a general health alert had been sounded in the area and precautionary measures were being taken.

No cholera deaths reported in Assam tea gardens this year. (2011)
The Government today informed that no deaths due to cholera were reported in the tea gardens of Assam during the current financial year. Minister of Rural Development and Drinking Water and Sanitation Shri Jairam Ramesh informed this in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha. Last year (2010) 877 cases and 22 deaths due to cholera outbreak were reported from tea gardens in Sonitpur district of Assam. He said, the Government of Assam has taken up implementation of 18 piped water supply schemes and installation of 3,059 spot sources of different category in the tea gardens for providing safe drinking water.
