Indonesian delegation to APEC meeting arrives in Sydney
Canberra (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian delegation to the Health Ministerial Meeting (HMM) and Health Task Force (HTF) of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum which would discuss bird flu (H5N1) issues, arrived in Sydney on Monday.
"All members of the Indonesian delegation arrived this morning while Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari is expected on Wednesday," the Indonesian Consul General in Sydney, Sudaryomo Hartosudarmo, said on Monday.
He said that the Indonesian delegation was composed of 10 members from the Health Ministry and the office of the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs.
The health ministers of APEC's 21-member economies will hold their third meeting in Sydney from June 5 to 8, 2007 to discuss the Avian Influenza issue as the main topic.
The first and second HMM meetings were respectively held in Thailand in 2003 and Vietnam in 2006.
According to the APEC website, the Australian government in cooperation with its counterparts from the other 20 member countries of APEC will develop a strong and relevant HMM agenda.
The APEC health ministers have since the first HMM forum discussed various issues and cooperated in the handling of the spread of SARS, increasing common health resilience, anticipating the outbreak of communicable diseases and developing a project to handle the outbreak of the H5N1 epidemic in the region.
Among APEC, Indonesia, China and Vietnam are members which have continued to fight against the spread of bird flu cases.
In Indonesia, the health ministry recorded at least 95 bird flu cases, of which 76 victims were killed.
The APEC is composed of Indonesia, Australia, the United States, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
