Arizona school closes with flu outbreak

Posted: 53 minutes ago

HUACHUCA CITY, Ariz. ? Health officials suspect an outbreak of swine flu has caused an Arizona school to shut down after more than a third of the students called in sick.

Huachuca City Elementary will closed, the rest of the week followed by the regular fall break. Crews will disinfect everything that children put their hands on, from door knobs and desks to restrooms, and the cafeteria.

On Monday, 171 of the 475 students and 10 staffers stayed home from the southern Arizona school. That was up from 140 student absences Friday.

Cochise County Health Director Vaira Harik said Tuesday the vast majority of flu circulating in the area is the H1N1 swine flu virus, so while victims haven't been tested, officials assume swine flu is to blame.

Tucson school closes due to flu outbreak

The H1N1 virus has shut down a Tucson charter school for the remainder of the week.

Paulo Freire Freedom School has reported that nearly half of its students and teaching staff is out with influenza-like illnesses.

In all, 35 people ? two teachers and 33 students ? are affected, said Patti Woodcock, spokeswoman for the Pima County Health Department.

The school, located at 300 E. University Blvd # 10, serves grades six through eight.

The closure begins Wednesday and school doors will re-open Monday.

The school is sending a letter home to parents explaining the closure.
Parent-teacher conferences were scheduled to begin Wednesday and students were only going to be attending half-day, so it was logical to suspend classes and reschedule conferences if the student, parent or teacher is ill.
