Cattle dying from ecological poisoning

NAVAJO COUNTY ? The Navajo County Sheriff?s Office, Arizona Department of Livestock, Arizona Game and Fish and U.S. Forest Service are investigating a rash of recent, unexplained deaths in cattle near Heber-Overgaard.
NCSO Deputy Chief David Clouse said in a Thursday, Sept. 14, press release that a rancher who lives west of Heber-Overgaard reported finding two dead cows near Forest Road 9886T in the Phoenix Park Wash area on Sept. 9. Two days later the NCSO got report of another 14 dead cows in the same area.
NCSO investigators are involved in both investigations. Arizona Livestock Department legislative liaison and public information officer Rob Smook said so far they have 18 confirmed cow deaths in the area from ecological poisoning.

Cause of deceased cattle remains unclear

The death of a number of head of cattle remains unclear after Navajo County Sheriff?s Office received information from the initial chemical tests taken last week that came back negative. Further investigation and testing from the State Veterinarian is pending to determine cause of death to the livestock.

Initial reports that were received indicate the cattle may have been shot and killed. However, further investigation indicates that the cattle all appeared to have suffered from a natural occurring ecological poisoning due to the current conditions in the forest.
Other reports have also been received from other nearby ranchers as well. So far, the total number of cattle deceased is 24 in the Heber/Overgaard area.
