04-05-10

The director of Epidemiology Jujuy, Adolfo Martinez, said there were five cases of the disease transmitted by rodents so far this year and one of them was fatal.

The hantavirus is endemic in the province, affecting especially since the first days of cold.

The fatal case occurred last week in the town of Libertador General San Martin, while the remaining four patients were treated at San Pedro, Monterrico and the provincial capital.

The official explained that these "are areas where every year is aware of the presence of cases in early winter when the cold start."

Hantavirus is a disease transmitted infected rodents, particularly mice. The virus is found in urine, saliva and feces.

The disease is transmitted to humans by breathing air contaminated with urine, feces or saliva of rodents, although it can be transmitted by touching your nose or mouth after handling or by the bite of one of these animals.

Health authorities warned that the first symptoms of the disease are shortness of breath, muscle aches and fever. Other common symptoms are headache, cough, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
