With the arrival of cold, the specialist of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Jalisco, Teresita Flores Salda?a, urged people to take preventive measures to avoid affecting the ear.
The otolaryngologist Unit Ambulatory Care Family Medicine (UMAA) No. 52 of the IMSS in Jalisco, said that after the common cold, otitis media is the second cause of consultation in the areas of pediatrics during the winter season.
He estimated that 75 percent of children under one year of age had an episode of otitis media during the year, while this may rise to 80 percent in pediatric patients three years.
Otitis media mentioned that primarily affects children from six to three months old and another minor peak below five years, with both ranges the highest incidence of cases.
He explained that the otitis media is an inflammation of the inner ear associated with respiratory infections and other threats such as tonsillitis and said this is due to the anatomy of the ear itself, the airways become inflamed ventilation decreases and this favors the proliferation of viruses and bacteria.
He noted that when there is leakage or accumulation of purulent fluid may be a risk of a perforated eardrum and generate intense pain, so the doctor may choose to drain accumulated pus or mucus.
He said that children whose parents smoke are more likely to develop otitis media as well as those with congenital abnormalities, angina too big, Down syndrome, cleft lip and palate and HIV.
Flores Salda?a recommended to prevent the development of otitis media, avoid sudden temperature changes, dress warmly, eat fruits and vegetables to increase the body's defenses, and not exposed to tobacco snuff, either directly or indirectly.
