Apparent flu outbreak forces Newton High to close for three days

NEWTON, TX (KTRE) - An apparent flu outbreak which has caused 24 percent of the student body to stay home has forced Newton ISD to close its high school for three days, according to the superintendent.
Seventy-one of the 307 students at Newton High did not attend school Monday, most of them because of flu-like conditions, Superintendent Sherrie Leach said.
Leach said the district is following health officials' recommendation to shut down the school for 72 hours, starting Tuesday, while crews disinfect the property.
It is not clear if the cases are suspected H1N1 or any other type of flu, Leach said.
Classes are scheduled to resume Friday.
Leach said it is not yet clear if the school will have to make up for lost time.
"We may qualify for a state waiver, but right now we're just worried about doing what's in the best interests of our children," she said.
