Mbanza Kongo – One hundred and 35 cases of measles, affecting children under five years of age, were reported from November 2023 to March this year, by health authorities in the province of Zaire.
Speaking today, Wednesday, to ANGOP, the provincial supervisor of health promotion, Andrade Luzailawo Kiazuako, informed that to prevent the spread of the disease, health authorities in the region carried out a lockdown vaccination campaign, which made it possible to immunize five thousand and 922 children from eight months to five years of age.
He explained that measles cases were mostly detected in some border areas of the province of Zaire with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), namely Luvo, in Mbanza Kongo, and Soyo, therefore raising the possibility that the disease originates from the neighboring country.
He said that of the number of cases reported, 96 were diagnosed in the municipality of Mbanza Kongo and 39 in Soyo.
Andrade Kianzuaku said that the vaccination campaign continues in fixed posts created in the affected municipalities, ensuring that the health sector in the region has sufficient doses to satisfy demand.
On the occasion, he asked parents and guardians to comply with their children's vaccination schedule as a way of preventing possible outbreaks. DMN/JL
