Angola: Luanda International Airport Prepared Against Swine Flu

2 May 2009

Luanda ? The Luanda "4 de Fevereiro" International Airport is prepared to act and arrest the penetration of the swine flu in the country through the capital.

This was said by the technical team of the inter-ministerial commission on the disease that visited the airport's health department and other concerned facilities set up to handle any possible case on the spot.

Headed by the minister of agriculture, Pedro Canga, in his capacity as inter-ministerial commission assistant coordinator, the team was appointed by the head of State, Jos? Eduardo dos Santos, on Wednesday, to take epidemiological safety and surveillance measures against the swine flu.

The technical team found that the Luanda airport is equipped to detect, isolate and prevent a possible entry into the country of people infected with the swine flu virus, as two suspect cases have been detected in the neighbouring South Africa, the first in the continent, according to information released by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

According to the national director of Public Health, Adelaide de Carvalho, no specific recommendations have been made to the health workers deployed at the airport, but they will continue performing their prevention duties.

The technical team that visited the airport included the deputy minister of Health and spokesperson, Carlos Alberto Masseca, Adelaide de Carvalho, the Luanda Health delegate and other technicians from other ministries involved.

The commission has been appointed to prevent the outbreak of the swine flu in the country, after it was first detected in Mexico.

The measures recommended shall be in compliance with the international health norms, to be adopted at all country's ports of entry, in order to detect, isolate and prevent the entrance of people carrying the virus.

The team is coordinated by the Health minister, Jos? Van-D?nen, assisted by his Agriculture colleague, Afonso Pedro Canga.

It includes the ministers of National Defence, Kundi Payhama, Interior, Roberto Leal Monteiro "Ngongo", Finance, Severim de Morais, Territory Administration, Virg?lio de Fontes Pereira, Transports, Augusto Tom?s, Social Communication, Manuel Rabelais, Commerce, Idalina Valente, Environment, F?tima Jardim, and Oil, Botelho de Vasconcelos.
