HYDERABAD: Seasonal diseases are back! The change of climate has triggered an increase in cases of viral fevers, gastroenteritis, diarrhoea, hepatitis and malaria in the State capital. The outpatient departments of Gandhi and Fever hospitals are teeming with patients suffering from seasonal ailments. By taking simple precautions, authorities maintain that these ailments could be avoided easily.
Between January and June, the district health authorities have reported close to 200 malarial cases in twin cities. In the last two months alone, nearly 40 cases of malaria were confirmed in Hyderabad district. The Fever Hospital has received over 170 cases of viral fevers in June.
In the last three months, the number of cases of jaundice has reached 26 while the gastro and diarrheal cases have crossed the 1,000 mark. And if cases of seasonal ailments at private hospitals, clinics and nursing homes are added up, the numbers would be alarmingly high.
On an average, the outpatient department of Fever hospital is receiving 1,000 patients. ?This is the time for seasonal ailments and obviously the numbers are bound to go up. Precautionary measures should be taken by the people,? said Superintendant of Fever Hospital B.V.S. Manjula.
According to health authorities, consumption of contaminated water, mosquito breeding and lack of personal hygiene continue to be the major reasons behind the spurt in cases. The public are advised to avoid consuming food at roadside eateries.
High risk areas
?Our medical teams will visit all the high risk areas in the district to supply medicines and refer them to tertiary hospitals in case of emergencies,? district medical and health officer Ch. Jaya Kumari said.
