Mystery fever rattles villagers in Bhadrachalam

According to the villagers, more than ten residents of Gundala Colony died of various ailments, including ?unknown fevers?, in the last couple of months. However, the health authorities put the figure of deaths caused by the ?unknown viral fever? at just two.

When contacted, District Medical and Health Officer B. Bhanu Prakash said that Rambabu died of jaundice.

Of the total five deaths reported in the village in the past three months, three persons died of cardiac, liver and kidney related disorders.

Two deaths occurred due to an unknown viral fever, he said, adding that the blood samples of those suffering from fevers in the village will be sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune on Wednesday.

Kunja Anitha, 14, an inmate of the Tribal Welfare Ashram High School at Ulvanur in Palvancha mandal, died of suspected dengue at a private hospital in Kothagudem on Tuesday, sources said.

Another patient of Palvancha town, who had fever, died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kothagudem on the same day.

However, health officials attributed the death of Anitha to ?renal failure?.

Meanwhile, several villagers are down with fever at Kommugudem in Julurupadu mandal. Some of them reportedly tested positive for typhoid, sources added.

Cases of fever reported from Gundala Colony, PHC Nellipaka, CHC
Bhadrachalam, District Khammam. District RRT investigated the
outbreak. Active search for cases done. All cases treated
symptomatically. Poor sanitary condition was observed in the
village.456 blood smears negative for malaria. Out of 100 samples
tested 20 samples tested positive for Dengue IgM ELISA.
Entomological survey done. Anti larval activities and fogging done in
the affected area. IEC done regarding personal protective measures
