Summary: Week 16, April 16?21, 2012

During Week 16, influenza activity remained elevated in Alberta, but appears to be decreasing. There was a decrease in the number of confirmed cases, an increase in influenza-like illness (ILI) in the community, a decrease in the number of new hospitalized cases, and an increase in the number of confirmed influenza outbreaks. The peak in influenza activity was later in the season than usual, and although decreasing, we can expect to continue to see some influenza activity over the next few weeks.

Summary: Week 20, May 13?19, 2012

During Week 20, influenza activity increased slightly. There was an increase in the number of confirmed cases, an increase in influenza-like illness (ILI) in the community, and an influenza B outbreak. However, there was a decrease in the number of new hospitalized cases, and a decrease in the number of visits to medical offices for influenza. Influenza activity appeared to peak several weeks later in the season than usual this year and recently has been decreasing to seasonal levels for the summer.

During Week 25, influenza activity remained low. The number of confirmed cases was similar the previous weeks, influenza-like illness (ILI) in the community remained low, and there was a decrease in the number of visits to emergency departments and medical offices for influenza. There were sporadic cases confirmed in Calgary Zone and Edmonton Zone, and one confirmed influenza A (H3) outbreak in Calgary Zone.
