Alaska's top doctor takes job with CDC & new flu case

AlaskaDenise

In Memoriam
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Alaska's top doctor is taking a job with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Jay Butler's last day with the state will be June 21.

At the CDC, he will work with vaccine development, distribution and evaluation on the agency's swine flu response.

Butler came to the state in 2005 as the chief epidemiologist. He later became director of public health, and has been the chief medical officer for two years.

From 1998-2005, he directed the CDC's Arctic Investigations Program in Anchorage.

State officials said the position of chief medical office will remain open for now. State epidemiologist Dr. Joe McLaughlin will take over the state's swine flu response. The state on Friday said the state has four confirmed cases but no deaths.
