State health officials investigate legionella outbreak

State public health officials are investigating an outbreak in which people have become ill after being exposed to legionella bacteria.

A group of about 40 adults and young people from North Alabama might have been exposed to the bacteria in early July during a series of softball tournaments, said Dr. Mary G. McIntyre with the Alabama Department of Public Health. She serves as assistant state health officer for disease control and prevention and epidemiologist for the ADPH.

The exposure likely occurred on or about July 12, with the Health Department receiving the first reports July 16, she said. The group had traveled to softball tournaments in Gadsden, Millbrook and Birmingham, she said...
