FAIRBANKS ? Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, is on the rise nationwide and Alaska is no exception.

According to the epidemiology page in the Health and Social Services section of the state website, 55 cases of the disease have been documented so far this year, more than double the 24 cases reported in 2011. While that number might seem high, public health officials say there?s no cause for panic...

...The Anchorage/Mat-Su area reported 14 cases in the week of Dec. 2 through Dec. 8, the latest period covered by the state?s tracking. That matches the weekly high for the year recorded for Aug. 5-11, also in the Anchorage/Mat-Su area.

No cases were reported in Interior Alaska in the latest period. Three cases were reported in the region during the period of Nov. 25 to Dec. 1.

Anchorage/Mat-Su has reported 136 cases since Jan. 1. Interior Alaska has reported 48 cases, followed by the Gulf Coast at 28 cases, Northern Alaska at 23 cases, Southwest Alaska at 10 cases and Southeast Alaska at six cases...
