Screening duty at airport exposes doctor and nurse to virus attack
A nurse on screening duty at the Sardar Patel International Airport, and her nephew reported symptoms of the H1N1 virus on Monday, even as a 27-year-old female doctor from the Sola Civil Hospital also on airport duty was confirmed positive the same day.
Samples of the two suspected cases have been sent to the
National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for confirmation.
Incidentally, the total number of confirmed cases in the state has now reached eight. Maharashtra has now invoked the Epidemics Act, while Gujarat had invoked the Act last month.
Meanwhile, the doctor has been kept in isolation at the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad. Sources at the Civil Hospital in Sola said that her husband has also developed the symptoms and has been quarantined at his residence.
Medicos are now alarmed. In the absence of adequate safety gear, doctors on screening duty at the airport at the highest risk of infection.
A doctor said on conditions of anonymity: ?Two to three of our colleagues have developed symptoms. Any one of us can contract the virus, as we do no have adequate protection gear. We have informed authorities at the hospital about the same.?
The first positive case reported from the state was of a Thai National who had come to Kandla Port as a crewmember of a Thai ship. The 28-year-old was tested positive on July 3.
