Transmission---------------African swine fever can be transmitted by direct contact with infected animals, indirect contact on fomites, and tick vectors. Transmission during direct contact is usually by oronasal spread. Aerosol transmission is thought to be unimportant, and only seems to occur over short distances when pigs are in close contact. African swine fever virus can be found in all tissues and body fluids, but particularly high levels are found in the blood. Massive environmental contamination may result if blood is shed during necropsies or pig fights, or if a pig develops bloody diarrhea. The virus can also spread on fomites, including vehicles, feed, and equipment. There is evidence that some pigs may become carriers.African swine fever often spreads to new areas when pigs are fed uncooked scraps that contain ASFV-infected pork. In one outbreak, pigs became infected after being fed the intestines of guinea fowl that had eaten infected ticks. The African swine fever virus is highly resistant to environmental conditions. It can survive for a year and a half in blood stored at 4 deg C (39 deg F), 11 days in feces at room temperature, and at least a month in contaminated pig pens. The virus will also remain infectious for 150 days in boned meat stored at 3.9 deg C (39 deg F), 140 days in salted dried hams, and several years in frozen carcasses.African swine fever is also spread through the bite of infected _Ornithodoros_ spp. soft ticks. In tick populations, transstadial, transovarial, and sexual transmission occur. In Africa, ASFV is thought to cycle between newborn warthogs and the soft ticks (_Ornithodoros moubata_) that live in their burrows. Individual ticks can apparently remain infected for life, and infected soft tick colonies can maintain this virus for years. _Ornithodoros erraticus_ became infected with ASFV when the virus was enzootic in Spain and Portugal, and additional Ornithodoros spp have been infected in the laboratory.Other bloodsucking insects, such as mosquitoes and biting flies, may also be able to transmit the virus mechanically. Stable flies (_Stomoxys calcitrans_) can carry high levels of the virus for 2 days. Under experimental conditions, these flies could transmit ASFV 24 hours after feeding on infected pigs.2. Control----------To prevent introduction of the ASF virus [ASFV] into areas free of the disease, all garbage fed to pigs should be cooked. Unprocessed meat must be heated to at least 70 deg C (158 deg F) for 30 minutes to inactivate the virus; 30 minutes at 60 deg C (140 deg F) is sufficient for serum and bodily fluids. ASF is a highly contagious disease. Eradication is by slaughter of infected and in-contact animals, and disposal of carcasses, often by burying, rendering, or burning. Rapid diagnosis and the prevention of disease spread to feral or wild pigs is very important. Strict quarantines must be imposed. ASFV can survive for long periods on fomites and in the environment, and sanitation and disinfection are important in preventing further spread. Many common disinfectants are ineffective; care should be taken to use a disinfectant specifically approved for African swine fever. Sodium hypochlorite and some iodine and quaternary ammonium compounds are effective.Potential tick vectors should be controlled with acaricides. In outbreaks, a detailed entomological investigation should be conducted to investigate the possible role of local soft tick vectors and their potential for becoming long term carriers. Although _Ornithodoros moubata_ is an important long-term vector in Africa, and _Ornithodoros erraticus_ became chronically infected in Spain and Portugal, Ornithodoros ticks never became chronically infected during outbreaks in South America. In addition, biting insects that may be able to transmit the virus mechanically should be controlled. No treatment or vaccine exists for this disease, and an ASF vaccine is unlikely to be developed soon.3. FAO concerned as pig disease jumps from southern Russia to the Baltic.

22 October 2009, Rome ? The deadly pig disease African Swine Fever (ASF) has jumped 2,000 kilometres from southern Russia to St Petersburg in north-western Russia.

The latest outbreak was found near the Baltic city on October 20 confirming the worst fears of FAO experts who have been tracking the virus in Georgia and neighbouring countries for several years.

The danger is that ASF - which can not be transmitted to humans - could spread to other regions including the European Union countries, Eastern Europe, the Black Sea basin countries and - in the worst case scenario ? central Asia and even China, which has the largest pig population in the world.

Baltic worries

?Although we have known that the virus has been circulating in the Caucasus ? in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan - for several years now, eventually spreading to southern Russia, it is its sudden appearance far away near the Baltic coast that is worrying,? said Juan Lubroth, FAO?s Chief Veterinary Officer.

The virus shows both progressive local spread and also that it can be transported over wider geographic areas through the movement of infected swine or contaminated pork products.

China threatened

?The Baltic Republics together with the Ukraine, Belarus, Moldavia, Romania and Bulgaria are directly threatened,? said Lubroth. ?That means there could be possible incursions into the EU and also it could spread across Russia, including eastwards into Siberia and perhaps eventually China.?

Although Moslem populations do not consume pork, Iran, Turkey and central Asia could form a transit point for the virus because of relatively large numbers of wild boar in these areas. The clinical signs of ASF are very similar to classical swine fever virus and the two diseases have to be differentiated by specialised diagnostic laboratories.

?In the light of this outbreak, FAO is advising countries to be vigilant and roll out their early detection and response plans,? said Lubroth. Earlier this year, FAO?s Emergency Prevention System in animal health matters provided regional training courses for veterinary authorities in Ukraine and Belarus.

ASF in pig food

ASF is believed to have entered into the Caucasus through the Black Sea port of Poti, Georgia, where garbage from a ship was taken to a local dump where pigs would come to feed.

Contaminated pig swill - remainders of food, including a pork scrap that is then fed to swine - has also been implicated as a conduit for outbreaks in swine populations in the past.

In a sub-Saharan context the virus is spread through transmission in warthogs and other wild pig species and can be transmitted by a particular type of tick.

Local spread can occur from direct contact between pigs, and direct transmission is a growing problem. ASF existed for decades in the Iberian Peninsula until it was eliminated in the late 1990s.

A very limited focus of the infection is still present in the Italian island of Sardinia. In 1960?s through the 1980s, ASF outbreaks were reported in several European and Caribbean countries and Brazil.

No vaccine yet

There is currently no vaccine against ASF. FAO calls for a renewed effort by laboratories in the US, Europe and the Russian Federation to develop an effective vaccine against ASF. The disease is usually eradicated by the culling of infected animals and strict movement control.

Improved hygiene is production and feeding practices are useful in preventing the introduction of the disease in piggeries and swine holdings. African swine fever is caused by a virus and is not related at all to the H1N1 virus that is responsible for the current human influenza pandemic.

Despite the fact that the swine flu is rarely transmitted from animals to humans, Nikolayev customs pay special attention to products transported.



As it became known to the board of management of health on the proliferation of influenza virus H1N1, by Nicholas customs is only a deep-frozen meat. Doctors examine a sample of the meat, and only then pass it to the region. Live pigs do not carry through customs. State Committee introduced a ban on the import of live pigs. But not only in order to prevent the spread of swine influenza, and to avoid the epidemic of African swine, which is sick pigs.
