Taliban health officials in Herat say 16 cases of Congo fever, have been recorded in the province since Eid al-Adha.
According to a report published on Wednesday, June 10, by the Taliban-controlled Bakhtar News Agency, Dr. Amir Nejad, head of response and monitoring at the Taliban Public Health Directorate in Herat, said the cases were linked to the failure to follow health and safety guidelines during the slaughter and handling of livestock over the Eid holiday.

The World Health Organisation’s office in Afghanistan has reported a significant surge in suspected Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), with 483 suspected infections and 21 deaths in June.
This represents a 174.4-per cent increase in suspected cases compared to 176 suspected cases and nine deaths reported in May, the office said in its latest report.
