Winlock resident Trent Swanson hated getting his flu shot.

A bad reaction to a flu vaccine three years ago deterred Swanson from getting another one, but he had managed to avoid getting sick without a shot ? until he caught the virus. Swanson, 36, has been in a medically-induced coma since Jan. 23, after catching the H1N1 flu, the deadly strain commonly called ?swine flu.?

Swanson?s coma has brought his family?s life to a standstill, and his father, Bruce Swanson, said he hopes others will learn from his son?s plight and get vaccinated.

Winlock Man Out of Coma From H1N1 Flu, Expected to Recover

The Winlock man diagnosed Jan. 23 with swine flu awoke this weekend from a month-long coma and is starting to breath on his own.

Trent Swanson, 36, went to Providence Centralia Hospital last month when he started coughing up blood and had difficulty breathing following a hunting trip with a friend.

The first article says Mr. Swanson has asthma and was diagnosed as having bronchitis the first time he went to the doctor, so may not have had early antiviral treatment.
