A 73-year-old man who was a chronic smoker

Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority: The spokesperson of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) made the following announcement today (December 24) regarding the death of a human swine influenza (HSI) patient: A 73-year-old man who was a chronic smoker attended the Accident and Emergency Department of TMH on December 22 due to flu and fever symptoms. His condition was critical. The patient was transferred to Intensive Care Unit for treatment and on ventilation support.

The patient's condition continued to deteriorate and succumbed at 7.59pm on the same day (December 22). Positive result of HSI was confirmed yesterday (December 23). The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.
