8.5 magnitude quake hits Japan

A powerful undersea earthquake struck off Japan's west coast of Ogasawara islands on Saturday.

There have been no reports of serious damage, and no tsunami alerts have been issued.

According to the Japanese meteorological Agency, the 8.5 magnitude quake occurred at about 8:24 p.m. local time on Saturday.

The epicenter was 874 kilometers south of the capital Tokyo, at a depth of more than 660km. Reports say buildings in the capital swayed for almost a minute as the quake hit.

No tsunami warnings have been issued and there have been no immediate reports of injuries or extensive damage.
