7-year-old dies of swine flu in Pune, toll rises to 32

A seven-year-old girl died of swine flu here on Tuesday, taking the toll in the viral infection in the city to 32.

Priyanka Shimilkar, who was admitted to government-run Sassoon Hospital on August 29, had tested positive for the virus.

Meanwhile, a meeting of Ganesh mandals convened by the district administration has decided to avoid use of vermilion in the immersion procession of idols on September 3 keeping in view the possibility of allergic reaction to it.

The meeting held under chairmanship of district Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar felt that since swine flu affected the respiratory system, it would be advisable to avoid substances that could trigger adverse reactions among people.

The mandals also resolved to wind up immersion procession within 12 hours to prevent further spread of the virus.

According to district collector Chandrakant Dalvi, Priyanka Ankush Shilimkar of Veerwadi-Nasrapur, about 60 km from here, died at the Sassoon hospital at 6.35 am. ?She has tested positive for the H1N1 influenza,? he said.

Priyanka, a standard II student of a Zilla Parishad school in Veerwadi, was moved to the paediatric ICU of Sassoon at 3.30 am on August 29. ?She showed symptoms of cough, fever and loose motions at the time of admission,? he said.

Priyanka had stopped attending school since August 21. ?She took treatment from a general practitioner in Nasrapur from August 21-25. When the girl did not show any signs of improvement, she was brought to a private practitioner in Pune on August 27, who treated her for two days. She was moved to the Sassoon hospital on August 29, when her condition deteriorated. The girl was also diagnosed with meningitis,? Dalvi said.

?Priyanka?s condition was critical and she had been put on the ventilator. Her throat swab was sent to the NIV for testing the same day. Later, she tested positive for the H1N1 flu,? he said. He added, ?the five-year-old brother of Priyanka has been quarantined.?

Sachin Ethape, tehsildar of Bhor taluka, said district health officers have screened students of the ZP school in Veerwadi village where Priyanka studied. Asked whether the school would be shut down, Satish Gadave, block development officer of Bhor, said, ?We have not shut down the school, but parents have stopped sending children for the last two days.?

Meanwhile, eight more people tested positive for the H1N1 flu in the district on Tuesday. ?A total of 15 patients are being treated at the isolation ICUs of various government and private hospitals in the PMC and PCMC limits. Of these, six are on ventilators and their condition is critical,? district collector Dalvi said.

?Around 9,141 people were screened across the district, of which 457 were found suspected and given Tamiflu.?
