Verify messages on A(H1N1), parents urged

A TEXT message on the death of a student due to A(H1N1) circulating among parents of students studying in SJK (C) Chee Wen in USJ 1, Subang Jaya, has prompted about 600 of them to stop sending their children to school since last Tuesday.

?There is no truth to the text message. The female student in question is only a suspect case and has only been home quarantined on doctor?s orders since last week. Her parents have contacted the school to say that she is recovering,? Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) vice-chairman Yap Yun Fatt said.

Nothing to worry: Headmaster Wong said all extra-curricular activities that has been stopped since last week will continue after the school holidays.
Yap, who himself has received the text messages. has urged parents who had also received them to double-check with the source or the school.

Acccording to Yap, another boy from the same class also fell ill a few days after the girl and has been home quarantined as a suspected case.

?We do not have any confirmed A(H1N1) case in the school. So far over the last few weeks, only nine students have been suspected of having the flu and were home quarantined after seeing a doctor,? headmaster Wong Kee Chiew said.

According to Wong, the school was already taking precautionary measures, including taking the temperature of the students every day, distributing face masks and stopping all extra curricular activity as well as the daily morning assembly.

?Closing the school is not a solution as there are 2,600 students studying here. What will they do at home if they are not in school studying?? Wong said.

The school organised a school clean-up yesterday involving students, parents and teachers in an effort to raise awareness among them about the importance of cleanliness and personal hygience.

Yong Soo Ling, 44, a housewife, said she had heard of the text message about a student?s death through her friend.

?I immediately called up another friend upon hearing about it and she in turn had contacted the parents of the girl involved in the rumour. The girl was all right and had no doubts of sending my children to school,? Yong who has two daughters in the school, said.

Yong also said the clean-up activity was a good idea though she wished it had been done during the weekend when there would be more time to do a thorough cleaning.

Another parent, Steven Tan, 40, a businessman who has 12-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter was at the school to enquire if he could stop sending his children to school yesterday.

?I want to meet my children?s teachers and if they are not planning anything special in class, I will stop sending my children to school.

?If there is any homework for the holidays, they can do it at home,? Tan said.
