(CNN)At least seven people have died after an earthquake hit China's southwestern Sichuan province on Monday, according to Chinese broadcaster CCTV citing local authorities.
A 6.6-magnitude earthquake with a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) was reported southwest of Sichuan's capital Chengdu close to 1 p.m. local time on Monday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.
The quake's epicenter was about 43 kilometers (27 miles) southeast of Kangding, a city of around 100,000 people, according to the USGS...

Chinese President Xi Jinping urged all-out relief efforts to prioritize saving lives and minimizing casualties after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake jolted Luding county in Southwest China's Sichuan Province on Monday, killing at least 46 people and leaving 50 injured.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the instruction after the quake hit Luding county at 12:52 pm. The epicenter was monitored at 29.59 degrees north latitude and 102.08 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 16 kilometers in Luding county.

The tremor was felt obviously in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan, which is about 220 kilometers from the epicenter. Residents in other neighboring regions also felt it, according to the Sichuan Earthquake Administration.

Reporters from People Daily called the property, which is designated as a high-risk area, and confirmed the policy. “The earthquake wouldn't get too serious. Staying at home is the safest,” staff said.

Similar cases happened all over the city. Residents rushed downstairs as tremors hit, only to be told by health workers they’re not allowed to leave.
