28th swine flu death in Wales

One additional death from swine flu has been reported in the last seven days, bringing the total number of deaths from swine flu in Wales to 28.
As at noon on 30 December, 649 cases of laboratory-confirmed swine flu had been reported by National Public Health Service health protection teams, of whom 438 had been admitted to hospital and 62 had been treated on intensive care or high dependency units.
As at noon on 30 December, 11 people were hospitalised in Wales in connection with swine flu, with three being treated in a critical care unit.
During the week ending 30 December, consultation rates for swine flu were highest in children under the age of four.
The influenza consultation rate in Wales (per 100,000 practice population per week) for the week ending 27 December (using the weekly GP sentinel report) decreased to 7.47 per 100,000 from 20.3 in the previous week. This period includes Christmas Eve and Christmas Day when reduced GP opening hours may have affected the consultation rate.
