21 Pelicans Found Dead at Bulgaria's Srebarna Nature Reserve

The bodies of 21 pelicans were found in the Srebarna nature reserve in northeastern Bulgaria on Tuesday.

The likely causes of the birds' death are disease, poisoning or overpopulation of the colony, private bTV station reports.

The reserve has a pelican colony consisting of 65 couples and during the inspection on Tuesday newly-hatched pelicans were discovered.

Employees at the reserve and local residents claim that there has been no such mass death of birds until now.

Still dying pelicans in reserve "Silver"

Six dead pelicans were found Monday in reserve "Silver". This dead birds found there are 27 in number.

For recent deaths of protected species announced the director of the Regional Directorate for Food Safety in Silistra Dr. Sebahtin Khalid said on Nova TV earlier this week.

First 21 dead pelican found in the reserve last week were infected with bird flu (H5N1). This was discovered by studies done at the National Diagnostic and Research Veterinary Institute in Sofia, confirmed by the Ministry of Agriculture and cited by MEW. In this regard the regional epizootic committee in Silistra identified last week mitigation measures to eradicate the disease.

Yet to be done research on the causes of death of the last six birds from Monday (March 30). Team of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has released a small aircraft with a camera to check if there died other protected species, specified by BGNES.

At the end of last week introduced restrictive measures for removal and transport of birds, sending hatching eggs, poultrymeat, release of captive wild birds, hunting of wild game and other activities.

There are three kilometers long and ten-kilometer protection zones.

The first zone is about the outbreak and includes the reserve and the village of Silver. The ten kilometer surveillance zone includes Silistra, villages Vetren, Aydemir and Colonel Lambrinovo of Silistra municipality, the municipal center Republic and the villages of the municipality absorption and meadows.

The health status of wild birds in the reserve "Silver" will continue to be monitored, will strengthen supervision and wild waterfowl, which will be made jointly with the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds.

Last Thursday, the Ministry of Environment sent two of its experts on biodiversity in place in reserve "Silver". Experts of the Ministry had to consider what further measures by the regional eco-inspection in Rousse can be taken in coordination with other competent authorities in order to protect the colony of Dalmatian Pelican in "Silver".

Last Monday (23 March) Environment Ministry has received "signal doubts about the death of the colony of pelicans" and then was ordered inspection. On Tuesday, a team of security guards of the reserve and specialists from the Regional Directorate for Food Safety in Silistra are exported from "Silver" 21 dead birds.

Ministry appealed to citizens if they notice dead wild bird, immediately call the RIEW Ruse or the Regional Veterinary Service. For security reasons, the bird should not be touched.
