At least 21 children in the Darfuri refugee camps in eastern Chad died of a mysterious disease last week [week of 23 Mar 2015].

The head of Iridimi refugee camp, near the West Darfur border, told Radio Dabanga that 15 children died of a disease causing fever, vomiting, and breathing difficulties.

In Touloum refugee camp, 6 children died of the same symptoms, camp head Haidar Gardia reported.

Both camp leaders requested the UN Refugees agency, UNHCR, to dispatch a medical team to the camps in eastern Chad, and contain the disease "before it kills more children".

[The description given in the news report above of the undiagnosed fatal illness in these refugee camps is too vague to help in forwarding a differential diagnosis. A ProMED-MENA post in March 2015 reported an increasing number of fatal cases of fever of unknown origin (FUO) in the North Darfur Jebel 'Amer mountain area (Undiagnosed outbreak - Sudan: (ND) 20150326.3255035). As it is known that movement between Sudan and Chad is not controlled and unrestricted, more information from knowledgeable sources on these outbreaks in refugee camps would be greatly appreciated.
