U.S. suffering worst whooping cough outbreak since 1959, CDC says

The United States is on track to have the highest number of whooping cough cases since 1959, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. Already, there have been nearly 18,000 cases of the disease, formally known as pertussis, reported nationwide this year, more than twice as many as at this point in 2011, said Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. There have been nine deaths so far, all of them in infants. In 2010, there were more than 27,000 cases and 27 deaths, 25 of them in infants...

Dr. Allison McGeer says that disease cycles and less potent vaccines are leading to a resurgence of whooping cough


Whooping cough, or pertussis, continues to be epidemic in the United States with just seven weeks left in the year. At least thirteen deaths have been reported due to the highly contagious illness. The number of new cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control each week is falling but only by 35 percent from summer to fall.

Based upon news reports and statements from state public health agencies, at least thirteen children have died from pertussis or its complications in 2012...

The latest data on the number of whooping cough, or pertussis, cases reported in the United States this year was released today, in the Center for Disease Control's (CDC) MMWR for week 48. With just four weeks left in the year, the number of illnesses now exceeds 41,000 with the addition of more current figures from select state health department websites. At least 16 deaths have occurred, 14 in infants...

On Dec. 18, public health agencies in Washington and Colorado announced two recent deaths due to pertussis, or whooping cough. Total nationwide is now at least 18. The death in Washington was a newborn. In Colorado, the patient who died was elderly...

The nation just suffered its worst year for whooping cough in nearly six decades, according to preliminary government figures.

Whooping cough ebbs and flows in multi-year cycles, and experts say 2012 appears to have reached a peak with 41,880 cases. Another factor: A vaccine used since the 90s doesn't last as long as the old one....
