Two baby girls die from swine flu

Swine flu continued to take its toll in Vietnam, as two children in central Danang City and southern Ben Tre Province succumbed to the virus.

According to the Danang Health Department, the 20-month-old baby girl fell ill on October 12; and was admitted to hospital with severe respiratory failure two days later.

After testing positive for influenza A (H1N1), she was treated with the antiviral drug Tamiflu, but died on Tuesday.

The second death is a 27-month-old baby girl in the southern province of Ben Tre.


Her death brought the number of swine flu fatalities in Vietnam to 26. The country has so far confirmed 10,267 infected cases in 59 cities and provinces.

The health ministry has agreed a nationwide plan to vaccinate people at high risk of infection, including pregnant women, the elderly, children, and those with chronic ailments.

It said the World Health Organization (WHO) will provide Vietnam with one million doses of swine flu vaccine early next year.
