17 more test positive, nine on ventilator

PUNE: As many as four schools and a college reported positive cases for H1N1 influenza on Thursday. The students have been given Tamiflu and the
condition of all of them is improving, said the joint director of state health services Ashok Mehta.
Mehta said that as many as 41 educational institutions including 34 schools and seven colleges have reported positive cases for H1N1 flu after the re-opening of schools and colleges.
Mehta said, "A 19-year-old student of SSPMS engineering college tested positive for H1N1. Five close contacts of the student have been given Tamiflu. The medical checking at the college is being undertaken. In another case, a 10-year-old boy from St Angles school Urulikanchan tested positive on September 16. Three close contacts of the student have been administered Tamiflu.
Mehta said a nine-year-old girl from BT Sahaney Hindi and English medium school at Tadiwala road tested positive for H1N1 flu. The girl resides close to the Naidu hospital. The medical checking was undertaken at the school, in which two students were detected symptomatic. A seven-year old boy from Symbiosis school Prabhat Road was another student who tested positive for H1N1.
The student has been quarantined at home. As many as 12 students from his class are being asked to conduct checking at the screening centre.
Meanwhile, as many as 17 people tested positive on Thursday, taking the total number of positive cases to 1,051. There are 17 critical patients, of which 9 patients are on ventilators.
Mehta said, "Around 8,625 people were screened at the centres across the district, taking the total number of screened patients above 4.06 lakh so far. At least 384 people were found as suspected."
