KATHMANDU, July 7 (Xinhua) -- A total of 105 persons among those admitted after suffering from gastroenteritis in various hospitals in the Nepali capital Kathmandu Valley have been found carrying the cholera bacteria.

According to the National News Agency, RSS Saturday's report, a large number of people suffering from diarrhea and vomiting have been coming for treatment in the valley's Tropical Diseases Hospital, Teku, Patan Hospital and Kanti Children's Hospital among others.

Contaminated water and food is said to be the reason for the increasing rise in the number of people suffering from the gastroenteritis including Cholera in the valley.

Kathmandu, July 6 : A total of 105 persons among those admitted after suffering from gastroenteritis in various hospitals in Kathmandu have been found carrying the cholera bacteria.

Contaminated water and food is said to be the reason for the increasing rise in the number of people suffering from the gastroenteritis including Cholera in the Valley.

Cholera (or Asiatic cholera or epidemic cholera) is a severe diarrheal disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.

The disease has been found to have taken epidemic proportions and vibrio cholerae was found in 46 persons in this week alone, said Director of the Epidemiology, Dr Manas Banerjee.

Among them some have returned home after treatment while some are still undergoing treatment, though they are out of danger, Dr. Banerjee said.

He also disclosed that an examination carried out recently by experts in Kathmandu had found that the quality of drinking water in the valley was not good.

In order to stay away from this disease, which is fatal at times, doctors have advised people to drink water that is boiled for at least 10 minutes or chlorinated and not consume open food products sold in Kathmandu.

Water is said to be seventy per cent of the causes of communicable diseases.

Dr. Banerjee also expressed the view that a coordinated initiative by the Water Supply Corporation, Quality and Food Technology Department and other bodies directly concerned with public health was essential in order to check such epidemic.
