The story is just now breaking.

"Legionnaires' Disease Linked to Chicago Hotel"

"Health officials are investigating three confirmed cases of Legionnaires' disease among people who stayed at a Chicago hotel.

The Chicago Department of Public Health and the JW Marriott Chicago Hotel issued an advisory Tuesday. They say guests with symptoms who stayed at the Adams Street hotel should contact their doctors.

...The city and the hotel are notifying the 8,500 guests who stayed there from July 16 through Aug. 15.

Authorities say they've identified the source of the bacteria and there's no ongoing health risk."

This is a good reminder to be vigilant about this disease. The article says the hotel is owned by a major corporate chain and located in a historic building that was remodeled just 2 years ago for a cost of 400 million dollars.

There may have been more cases. The 3 confirmed cases were all guests. But an article from the local media also mentions illnesses among hotel employees.

CBS Chicago:

"The three guests who came down with Legionnaire?s are all from out of state. One is in a hospital, two are recovering at home. They were part of a group that was staying at the hotel in the past month.

Dr. Kathy Ritger, with the Chicago Department of Public Health, said, ?They noticed among their employees, a number of people had a fever, cough, and some had developed pneumonia.?"

2 dead in Legionnaires' outbreak tied to downtown hotel

Two recent guests of a downtown Marriott have died after contracting Legionnaires? disease, Chicago Department of Public Health officials said this afternoon.

Those are among eight cases of Legionnaires? in people who stayed at the JW Marriott, 151 W. Adams St., between mid-July and mid-August.

None of the eight people who contracted the disease live in, or are being treated in, the Chicago area. City officials declined to provide any other information about the victims, citing privacy laws. It also wasn?t clear whether any of the other six surviving guests are in life-threatening condition.

A JANESBORO man has died after contracting Legionnaire?s disease during a holiday he took to Chicago.

Thomas (Tom) Keane, from McDermott Avenue, was one of eight people who contracted Legionnaire?s in Chicago?s Marriott Hotel in the past week.

He died at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital yesterday. It is understood at least one other person died.

AN Irishman has died after contracting Legionnaires' disease in a US hotel during a holiday.

Tom Keane (66) from Janesboro, Limerick died at the Mid-Western regional hospital in Limerick yesterday after succumbing to his illness.

He contracted the disease while in a four star hotel in Chicago.

The infection has already claimed the lives of two other people and eight other people are said to have contracted the disease at the JW Marriott Chicago hotel in downtown Chicago.

Mr Keane ? a father of three ? travelled to Chicago with his wife Olive for their 40th wedding anniversary. Their son, Shane (29) worked there for the summer and his parents decided to travel to Illinois to visit him. It is understood he was not staying at the JW Marriott hotel, but had stopped off their briefly when he contracted the illness.

Third person dies from Legionnaires? at Loop hotel

A third person has died from the Legionnaires? Disease outbreak linked to a downtown hotel ? and the hotel?s main fountain has been identified as the source of the disease.

The fountain in the lobby of the JW Marriott, 151 W. Adams St., was removed from the hotel and identified as the primary source, according to the Chicago Department of Public Health.

Secondary sources were found ? including the pool and locker rooms ? but they ?remain disabled or inaccessible to the public,? the health department said, adding officials believe there is no further risk of illness at the hotel.

The department has confirmed 10 cases of the illness and now three deaths.
