Kwilu: 30 deaths from a disease of still unknown origin in Kiaka (chiefdom)

Posted on Aug. 30, 2024 at 12:58 pm

A total of 30 people died in different villages of the Kiaka group, Niadi-Nkara sector, Bulungu territory, Kwilu province in the South-West of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Deaths recorded since March 2024 to date. They all died of a still unknown disease that manifests itself by swelling of the legs.

Adelin Nsukami Mukubi, head of the Kiakia group who gave this information on Thursday, August 29, 2024 to Media Congo Press (MCP) during an interview, likens it to Buruli ulcer better known as mbasu.

“Among the victims are young people, women and men. At the moment, there are other sick people who are receiving traditional treatment. This disease is generally known in Kikongo as 'Mbasu' and in Kiyansi as 'Nkena'. Often people are cured thanks to traditional medicine,” explained the Kiakia group leader.

He regretted the fact that this disease called “Mbasu” in Kikongo had taken on the appearance of an epidemic in this group of 14 villages.

“When someone is affected, their left or right leg begins to swell. Then wounds appear. A few days later the victim dies,” explains the group leader.

Contacted on this subject, Samy Lundu, a nurse at a local health centre, said he did not know the origin of this disease which has killed more than 20 people since last March.
