27 cases of local dengue found in Brevard, county remains under alert

Brevard County is at the center of Florida’s locally acquired dengue fever cases. As of last week, the state reported 27 cases.

“That’s a first for Brevard,” said Joseph Faella, the director of Brevard County Mosquito Control. “We have travel cases pretty much every year… But still nothing like this.”

Last year, Brevard reported eight travel-associated cases compared to only two so far this year. The surprise has been the local transmission, of which 11 of those 27 cases were reported last week.

A mosquito-borne illness alert was issued in Brevard at the end of July, when the county reported six cases. Miami-Dade is also under a mosquito-borne illness alert, having currently reported six cases. Pasco and Hillsborough counties each reported one case, and are under mosquito-borne illness advisories...

Following the weekend’s heavy showers, Brevard County Mosquito Control is working to eliminate possible watery breeding grounds and reduce the chances of any more dengue cases buzzing up.

“I'm hoping at this point that the spike is behind us,” said Joseph Faella, director of Brevard mosquito control. “We're optimistic that it's slowing down, although with this extra water, yeah, we may see a little bit of an influx in water-holding containers.”

In September, Brevard experienced a spike in localized dengue cases, totalling about 27 at the time, and leading the state. As of this week, the county has had 31 cases, making up about two-thirds of the Florida total, according to state data.

The mosquito-borne virus is not known to regularly occur in Florida. However, some cases do emerge yearly in Miami-Dade County, due to the area’s tropical conditions. What’s unusual is any local dengue acquired north of Broward County...

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Lee County Mosquito Control is reporting an unusual increase in mosquito-borne diseases this year, with international travelers bringing more than just memories back to Southwest Florida.

"Florida is definitely kind of a place where we see these imported cases, an awful lot of them this year, actually," McBride said.

According to the Florida Department of Health, the state has recorded 409 dengue fever cases so far this year, with 16 of those cases originating from Lee County. The state also documented 206 chikungunya cases, with 11 from Lee County.

McBride has personal experience with how serious these diseases can be after contracting one during her own travels.

"I went to a beautiful country and came back, and within two days, I was sitting on the couch, and within five minutes, I had 104 fever. Went from feeling fine to 104 and I was actually sick the entire summer," McBride said...

The Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County said it is working with Palm Beach County Mosquito Control to conduct surveillance and prevention efforts following the confirmed infection.

A locally acquired case means the person was infected by a mosquito in the area rather than while traveling to a place where dengue is more common.
