I have been thinking about this for a few days. I have come to the conclusion that 'door-to-door' is a really bad idea:

1) Everyone knows about the vaccines and has had free access for many, many months.

2) This puts the community vaccine information workers into potentially dangerous situations.

3) The community workers, from what I understand, are not going to be medical personnel, and might potentially be giving medical advice. Very unwise.

4) No one wants to be placed on any kind of list. By agents of the federal government especially not.


One exception to 'door-to-door' might be people who are living on the streets in tents. They are accustomed to social workers approaching them to offer services.

Some people do not want to take the vaccine after months of news about it. They will never be convinced. End of story.

I am fully vaccinated. I am not anti-vaccine - but...walking cold into unknown situations is not good for anyone.

D.C. community ambassadors go door to door encouraging coronavirus vaccinations

... They were part of the D.C. mayor’s Covid Community Ambassador program, a recent effort to hit the ground and talk with neighbors about the importance of being vaccinated. The ambassadors program is specifically targeting neighborhoods in Wards 7 and 8, which are majority Black and continue to lag behind the rest of the city in vaccinations.

... According to data from the mayor’s office, about 62 percent of D.C. residents have received at least one shot of a vaccine. In Ward 7, about 29 percent of residents have been vaccinated, and only 23 percent of residents in Ward 8 have gotten a shot.

... D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser(D) has partnered with seven nonprofit organizations for each to hire 25 to 45 ambassadors to go knocking door to door to help people understand the importance and safety of the vaccines.

MANKATO — To spread the word about a neighborhood vaccine clinic set for Tuesday, organizers recently went door to door near downtown Mankato.

It was the latest example of outreach efforts aimed at getting more people vaccinated against COVID-19. Although Blue Earth County’s vaccine rate is relatively strong within south-central Minnesota, numbers have slowed to a crawl in June and about 40% of the 12-and-older population remains unvaccinated.

On Thursday, the state announced it's launching a massive outreach effort to get COVID-19 vaccines to the most vulnerable residents.

The Department of Health says it wants to understand why some people are hesitant to receive the shot and hopes to educate them.

Workers will go door-to-door with vaccines to reach those who are in under-served communities and those whose first language might not be English.

My comment in post one is in reference to federal 'door-to-door' efforts. Local officials will better know what fits in their local communities.

Everyone has to eat. A better information effort (for anything) would be at grocery stores (large and small), big box stores, any location where food is.

I think this is a bad idea, too. I don't think the vaccinators are going to be in any more danger than anyone else who goes around knocking on strangers' doors, though. It's no secret that there are people doing illegal things in their homes in this country, and they can be defensive and paranoid.

It's the regular citizens getting anxiety and high blood pressure from this intrusiveness who concern me. Also, I worry about allergic reactions. Will the teams be competent in dealing with anaphylaxis? How long will they stay at a home to monitor reactions after the vaccination: 15 min, 30 min...?

That's exactly my fear. People who refuse the COVID-19 vaccine for political reasons are likely to react the exact same way that Afghans and Pakistanis who refuse the polio vaccine for political reasons react. Do we really want to be putting the vaccinators in that type of danger? And are we prepared for the wider reaction if/when something violent happens?

It's way over the top to smear citizens who don't want a COVID vaccine for any reason as murderers. It is more likely that some poor person's dog will get shot by the vaccinators' security detail if there is any sort of violence resulting from this folly.

Everyone is on their last nerve after 18 months of pandemic stressors. Now the federal matching unemployment cash and rent/mortgage moratoriums are ending. Uninvited visits to people's homes can really be problematic at this time leading to all sorts of unintended consequences. An overall bad idea.

Back a thousand years ago....Stephanie Marshall, the former pandemic communication coordinator, told me that the HHS knew that a certain percentage of people would not be reachable. As I remember from 2007, I think she said this was about 15%. I believe she had some data to support this number. This is the main reason why the HHS began their internet outreach programs. They wanted to reach more of the 85% of general population who were more supportive in the area of pandemic preparedness. This office was disbanded when the new administration took over in 2008.

The current admin must have this information. It is entirely possible that there is a core of 15% who are not supportive of pandemic communications - no matter what it is.

I still really think public settings are a much better place to present pandemic data, general information, viewpoints - including vaccines.

I think federal "door-to-door" is a big mistake. Big.

Also - there was some big celebrity event to push COVID-19 vaccines....really stupid. This is condescending. No one cares what celebrities think about vaccines.

After finding those articles indicating that door-to-door vaccination campaigns have been federally funded and active for a couple of months now in some states, I suspect the administration is trolling the media with the topic to misdirect attention from another topic. I would guess that topic is the laboratory origin theory of the pandemic coronavirus.

Still, the campaign is intrusive and misleading. "Volunteer" = a paid $15 per hour worker - paid with funds from a federal grant. Do they do background checks on these people? Can they be trusted with seniors and other vulnerable people at home alone? Just because someone is a community member does not exclude them from being a predator.

The thing is, that had COVID happened in 2007, most of that 15% would be a single group politically, with their distrust of the vaccine coming from a fear or hatred of the pharmaceutical industry. I suspect there have been plans to reach those people in place for years; perhaps that's why they don't seem to be a significant voice in the refusal movement right now. Right now, the refusals are coming from several different places, the largest of which seems to be people who, for whatever reason, have a distrust for the government. We've had 3 elections since 2000 that would have been flipped if 1 in 200 voters (spread evenly across the country) had voted the other way.

I feel like this vaccine refusal is a symptom of the deeper divisions and instability in the country.

But, do not use uninvited federal representatives to push medicine on people at their homes. There are a zillion other ways than "door-to-door" to present vaccine information.

I do not know who the admin is using to create these vaccine push ideas, but they **** at it.

As Covid cases rise in Florida, Governor DeSantis digs at Fauci with merchandise
